Tigers tormented as Warriors turn it on

- JESS LEADER

‘We are really disappointed with the loss and not accepting of the type of netball we turned up and played’ TORQUAY ASSISTANT COACH SONIA HARRIS

MODEWARRE is refusing to get ahead of itself, despite producing arguably its best performance of the year against quality opposition on Saturday.

The Warriors again flexed their firepower, proving why they sit second on the ladder with a dominant win over Torquay.

Torquay, the reigning premier, has been left to lick its wounds, with an honest coach Sonia Harris admitting her side had plenty to work on.

Having only beaten Torquay by two goals in Round 5, Saturday’s 43-28 win over the third-placed Tigers certainly proved that the Warriors are peaking at the right time.

“It was a great win,” coach Matt Armstrong said.

“And one of the better games that we have played this year, but we’re aware that this was just a home and away game and finals pressure and intensity will go up another notch again.

“Torquay are a quality side and I have no doubt that come finals time they’ll be tough to beat.”

Modewarre’s win was built on the goaling efforts of Kim Martin and Jess Crowe, who scored above 70 per cent against the Tigers, up on when the teams met earlier in the season. “Our goalers did a great job with their shooting and movement in the circle, and were given opportunities due to our hard work in defence,” Armstrong said.

“We’ve been working tirelessly on our structures and basic skills, and it showed today as we had minimal errors.”

Harris admitted “it was a test for us, which we failed”.

“This loss doesn’t determine our season or season outcome, but we had a chance to consolidate third spot and knock a big scalp off, and we didn’t do it,” Harris said.

“We were slow to start defensively but that improved by the second quarter. We had enough defensive turnovers but just couldn’t capitalise on any opportunities.

“We are really disappointed with the loss and not accepting of the type of netball we turned up and played.”
