GEELONG’S bid to enter a women’s team in the Victorian Premier Cricket ranks has edged closer to fruition following a landmark alliance.

The Geelong Cricket Club has joined forces with the Geelong Women’s Cricket Club in a major boost to cricket in the region.

The Cats, led by president Peter McCoombe, voted to merge with the women’s club at its AGM.

The club will now field two women’s teams for the 2017-18 season in Melbourne-based competition.

Plans are already afoot to enter a women’s team in the Premier cricket scene.

“This is a significant development in enabling girls and women in the Geelong region to achieve their aspirations of playing cricket at higher levels via the established pathways that already exist for cricketers at the GCC with Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia,” Geelong secretary Amanda Vines said.

The club is calling for girls/women to register their interest in joining the club by contacting the GCC Administrator by email — admin@geelongcc.com.au.

The Cats will also have a sign-on day for all players at its rooms at Simonds Stadium on Sunday, August 27, from 10am-2pm.

As the season approaches, the club plans to hold indoor training sessions for women’s team, as well as play matches on turf wickets at Kardinia Park.
