Putting laps in on beating scourge

- – CLAIRE MARTIN

THE Geelong College has lapped up donations for the Andrew Love Cancer Centre after their 10 hour swim-athon last week.

Staff, students and families participated in the school’s inaugural 10-hour swim-athon and managed to raise more than $19,000 for the worthy cause.

Year 10 student Harriet Jennett was the highest individual fundraiser, pulling together a total of $5100 for her team.

Harriet, 16, was diagnosed with leukaemia just before her fifth birthday. Now healed and back on track, she said she participated in the swim to give back to those who had helped her.

“They really need that support and I thought it was a good way of contributing and giving back,” she said.

She said her fellow student Jacqui Greer, 15, had also helped to organise the team and was there to jump in the pool on the day as well.

“All the donations were really brilliant, everybody was really generous and the support has been great,” she said.

The teams comprised 10 members and everyone swam laps for “about an hour and a half”. The overall winning team on the day was the school’s “Rec Centre Rainbow Fish” team who raised a total of $7269.

Other standouts included student team “The Young Guns” who raised a total of $1970 and Team Cheatley, who raised a total of $4083.
