AMMOS TEST YET TO COME

- JESS LEADER

GEELONG Amateur remains the benchmark of the competition — but not without a serious challenge from Barwon Heads.

With only one loss of the season, Ammos again found a way to win in the 42-37 victory over a Seagulls side fighting for a finals berth.

But the real test is five days away for Ammos, when they go head-to-head against Modewarre, who won the corresponding match by two goals back in Round 11.

“We have come a long way from the start of the season, although today certainly did show us we still need to work on a few things before we head into the finals campaign,” Ammos coach Ash Salter said.

“The competition is very close, it’s going to be a great few weeks of netball ahead to determine who will be sitting where on the ladder come finals.”

Led by Ally Matheson, Keisha Guilmartin and Breda O’Kane (23 goals), Salter said her team had “some great individual performances”.

“It was great to see some good one-on-one hit-outs against some talented Barwon Heads players,” Salter said. “We wanted to consolidate what we have been working on over the past few weeks — and execute the simple things well.”

But there was plenty to gain out of the result for the Seagulls, whose performance showed they are ready to compete with the top teams.

“We went into the game focusing on our game, regardless of the score,” Barwon Heads coach Olivia Wilson said.

“When we stuck to our game plan and used the ball sensibly, we were able to score freely, but any lapse in concentration allowed Ammos to capitalise.

“We are confident that if we play our best, we can match it to all teams, and at this stage we can still make finals.”

Julia Mitchell, Elise Ruggles and Wilson were among the Seagulls’ best on Saturday.
