Salter preps for Warrior power

- BFL NETBALL

GEELONG Amateur coach Ash Salter will get her first look at Modewarre this weekend when the top-of-the-table Ammos meet the Warriors at Queens Park.

Salter missed the clash earlier in the year when Modewarre defeated Ammos by two goals due to the fact she had just had a baby.

But despite not having seen her team’s biggest premiership threat up close, Salter had her spies give her enough feedback to know there is plenty to improve on from that match.

“It’s going to be a good match, I think the girls are excited for it, especially after the loss last time to Modda, they’re ready to give it a good crack,” Salter said.

“I wasn’t there at that match so it is a little difficult for me to say (what we took out of that match) but I think the girls learned that we need to make the most of any opportunities we get in terms of converting intercepts into goals.

“Also just looking after the ball and scoring off every single centre pass and just doing the simple things well. We just didn’t look after the ball well enough in that game.”

The Warriors have one of the best shooting combinations in the league with Kim Martin and Jess Crow patrolling the attacking third of the court, meaning Geelong Amateur’s defensive unit will be put to its biggest test of the season on Saturday.

Salter said there was every possibility Keisha Guilmartin would be used further up the court to help prevent the ball entering the circle as easily as it did earlier in the year.

“We’ve made a few different changes to our defensive lineup over the last couple of weeks and Keisha is such a good defender that she has the capacity to play in goal defence or goal keeper,” she said.

“We’ll see how she goes but she is a very agile, tall goal keeper so she can come out to goal defence with ease.

“It will depend on the day and we can make changes as we go, but Kim Martin is obviously a very strong goaler for Modewarre so we’ll be looking at what we can do to reduce her goal (scoring), that’s for sure.”

A win for Geelong Amateur would guarantee it top spot and a rest in the first week of finals, while the match presents Modewarre with its last chance of taking the top position from Ammos.
