IT’S A RUFF LIFE FOR SOME

- — HOLLY GAWNE

DO your friends hound you over the money you spend on your priceless pooch?

Don’t worry, according to a Geelong pet grooming and supply store owner, you’re part of a big pack of puppy-lovers, and that means, you’re not barking mad.

Debra Stock, owner of Pooches on Pakington, said many dog owners were willing to spend hundreds of dollars in a single visit to her online store or homebased business, to help make their fourlegged friend the top dog in town.

“People come in wanting to treat their dog to the full works for their birthday, which can include treats, grooming, a new coat, collar and lead ... all of this can add up to around $300,” Ms Stock said.

It comes as finder.com.au reveals Australians spent $18.9 billion on pet medical expenses last year, proving Aussies love their pets in sickness and in health.

Ms Stock said that just as we care enough about our pets to cover their vet bills, we love them enough to treat them when we can.

“People want to give back some of the love they receive from their pets,” she said. “For younger couples, dogs are often their test run for children and are treated like a true member of the family.

“I just think that some people have no problem spending $200 in one sitting on a weekly dinner or lunch out.

“So how is treating a pet any different? They’re both indulgences. Dogs represent unconditional love, and can you put a price on that?”
