Edwards confident of beating long odds

- RYAN REYNOLDS RACING

FRESHWATER Creek trainer Jamie Edwards takes a truck full of horses to Geelong Racecourse today confident all will run better than their prices suggest.

Edwards will have four head to the barriers today with none under double figure odds.

Roldana, a $16 chance in race 7, is his shortest priced runner.

Minyinga ($31, race 2), Gigi Girl ($34, race 9) and last-start winner Prince Ziggy ($26, race 10) are his other runners on the turf.

Edwards said Roldana was edging closer to the breeding barn with a decision to be made on her future after she runs in the Jack Rabbit Vineyard handicap (2418m).

“She raced below par her last start, she was OK the start before that,” Edwards said.

“She goes back to a lesser grade tomorrow, up to 2400m and back to the grass. She gets every chance.

“If she performs well, and we tend to think she will, then she will have another prep.”

Edwards is looking for improvement from Minyinga, who put in an OK performance on debut at Echuca.

Gigi Girl has been disap- pointing this preparation, but a change of training routine and blinkers could spark the smart mare.

Prince Ziggy was an eyecatcher in his dominant win at Warrnambool last start and has been backed up quickly after that performance.

He was ridden off the pace in that race and the same is likely to happen from barrier 19 today.

“I wouldn’t have backed him up if he didn’t pull up enormous. He is as bright as a button,” Edwards said.

“I’m just taking a punt that with big fields all day that come towards the end of the day you are looking at coming towards the middle of the track.

“He will go back from the barrier and hopefully get a suck into it then let down.

“No doubt he will go as good as he can go.”
