Sculptures liven up art of the city

- – SHANE FOWLES

THE growth of public art in Geelong is gathering pace, with three new sculptures currently being installed in the city.

A joint State Government and council initiative, the investment aims to create a sculpture and arts trail and improve linkages between the CBD and the waterfront.

The Geelong council has set aside $50,000 in this year’s budget to roll out the public art strategy project.

Rescue, pictured far right, which sits on the corner of Cunningham St and Western Beach Rd, comprises seven ships symbolising the seven continents being plucked from the sea in an act of rescue.

The artists, Julie Collins and Derek John, said the work asks what role people play in tackling key issues such as climate change, poverty, migration, population and consumer waste.

“It asks: What role do we all play in this journey? Who is the rescuer? Is it a God, a politician, a local action group or a shared global community?”

Me, Myself and iPhone, pictured right, can be found on the corner of Brougham and Moorabool streets.

The piece, by Anne Anderson, addresses people’s obsession with social media.

Tranquillity will be placed on the corner of Sydney Parade, Ryrie St and Swanston St. The artist, Andrew Kasper, wants people to feel peacefulness as they pass it by.
