Diamonds call on Mannix for Quad Series
GEELONG’S Emily Mannix has been called into the Australian Diamonds team for the upcoming Quad Series after defender Sharni Layton withdrew due to exhaustion.
The Melbourne Vixens rising star earnt the promotion following an outstanding Sun- corp Super Netball season, which saw her runner-up to Liz Watson in the club’s Sharelle McMahon Medal.
Vixens coach Simone McKinnis said it was a great opportunity for Mannix.
“The exposure in being a part of the international series is an exciting opportunity and I am sure she will make the most of it,” McKinnis said.
The 23-year-old’s call up takes the Melbourne Vixens representation to four, the most of any club, with Watson, Jo Weston and fellow Geelong star Tegan Philip.
Layton, who made her international debut in June 2011 and has amassed 46 test caps, will take a leave of absence from netball after consultation with medical experts.
Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander said the 29-year-old’s health was more important than netball.
“First and foremost we have a duty of care to the wellbeing of our athletes,” Alexander said.
“Sharni has represented and led our country with her heart on her sleeve, but is in need of a break. Our medical and support staff will continue to work closely with Sharni during this time.”
Layton has been named in every Diamonds touring team since September 2013, after a shoulder injury sidelined her from international duties in 2012
The Diamonds open the Quad Series in Brisbane on August 26 against the England Roses.
