Yarran cops jail sentence
DETAILS of the damage that methamphetamine has caused another former AFL footballer has emerged in a Perth court where former Dockers forward Shane Yarran was sentenced to six months in jail for a string of offences.
The 28-year-old has been behind bars since May 24 when he exceeded 120km/h driving his mother’s car in a 60km/h zone during an early morning police pursuit.
The chase ended with Yarran jumping out of the moving vehicle, which rolled across four lanes, and being found by a police dog while hiding in bushes.
Yarran was also convicted of disorderly behaviour over a bizarre roadside disturbance in January, fuelled by a combination of methamphetamine and prescription drugs that caused him to act in a “Jekyll and Hyde-like fashion”, defence counsel Luka Margaretic said.
When police arrived, Yarran was standing in the carriageway — shirtless, with cuts on his chest and behaving erratically — while his partner stood on the footpath with their daughter, begging him to calm down.
He became hostile when officers tried to move him away from traffic, shouting profanities and racial abuse.
Mr Margaretic said the cash from Yarran’s football success and associating with the wrong peers led to illicit substances, which derailed his ability to play football and damaged his relationships.
Yarran’s sentence was backdated to when he went into custody and he was also ordered to pay about $5000 in fines.
He still faces court over two assault matters.
