Titles berth for our young trio

- GRACE KALAC

THREE Hockey Geelong clubmates will take the field at next month’s under-13 national carnival.

Kade Leigh, Harrison Leigh and Brayden Caldow are members of the Victorian squad which will travel to Perth to compete in the championships, from September 28 to October 8.

Two other Geelong players, Altona-based pair Jamie van der Ploeg (HV Blue) and Harry Bradbury (HV White), are also in the team.

Kade and Harrison’s mother, Shannon, said that the family were very happy that the duo had been given the opportunity to go to the titles.

Shannon said that the Barwon Sports Academy had assisted with expenses.

The trio have been training in Melbourne twice a week since being named in the squad last month.

Kade made his Victorian team debut in 2016, when he competed at the Under 12 championships in Cairns. It is Harrison and Brayden’s first national title.

The Victorian under 13 boys are the defending champions.

Meanwhile, Hockey Geelong will have one junior side in Victorian league finals, starting on Friday.

The under 16 mixed pennant team finished fourth and will meet Essendon in a knockout final.

During the season, the teams have met three times, for a win each and a draw.

Geelong’s three shield teams missed finals.

The under 16 girls finished fifth, under 14 mixed fifth (one point from the top four) and the under 14 girls 10th.
