Finance chief’s short stay

Senior council manager leaves after 6 months

- ALEX SINNOTT

MYSTERY surrounds the departure of the City of Greater Geelong’s finance director Joanne Moloney, with the council boss failing to shed light on the issue.

Chief executive Kelvin Spiller confirmed Ms Moloney was no longer employed at City Hall, less than six months after she took on the role with a six-figure salary.

He said she would be temporarily replaced by ex-Surf Coast Shire chief executive Peter Anderson until a permanent successor was appointed.

“As per normal practice, I will not discuss private personnel matters relating to staff,” he said. “I put interim arrangements into place (this week) for managing the Finance and Strategy division with the appointment of Peter Anderson.

“Peter has an extensive background in local government and was the former chief executive of Surf Coast Shire following its formation.

“He has also held senior management roles with various State Government departments and agencies, including Regional Development Victoria as regional manager of the Barwon South West region.”

More recently, Mr Anderson worked with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning to establish the Central Geelong Revitalisation Partnership.

Ms Moloney was educational delivery director at Box Hill Institute before taking up the Geelong role in March. She previously held top positions at Skilled Group and BlueScope Steel.

Her departure is the latest at City Hall in recent months. Municipal planning chief Peter Bettess resigned in July after seven years with the council to set up a consultancy business.
