Rain and shine for old classic

- – ALEX SINNOTT

MOVE over Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds.

Unfurling the yellow umbrellas for their 2017 take on Singing in the Rain, Taylor Coysh, Georgia Potter and Beth Hodge have breathed new life into the 1952 Hollywood classic.

The Bellarine Secondary College students are following in the lightningquick footsteps of the tap- dancing legends with three performances scheduled later this week.

Beth Hodge will play Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen in the film classic), Taylor Coysh will take on the role of Don Lockwood (originally played by screen legend Kelly), and Georgia Potter portrays Kathy Selden (the character played by Reynolds).

Bellarine Secondary drama teacher Cassia Webster said Reynolds’ death last this year highlighted the long-lasting popularity of song-and-dance show.

“We’re doing the junior version, which means it isn’t as long as the film but contains all the classic scenes that people love from the movie,” Ms Webster said.

“It’s real joy-filled, light entertainment that all generations can get involved in. There’s a romantic side to it as well as a farcical side, It’s great fun.”

Singing in the Rain will be performed at The Potato Shed at 7.30pm on Thursday, August 31; Friday September 1 and Saturday, September 2. Tickets are available from City of Greater Geelong offices or at the door.
