Deakin slips in global rankings
DEAKIN University remains in the top 2 per cent of global rankings, despite sliding down the ranks of a global list of institutions.
In a Times Higher Education World University Ranking league table released yesterday, Deakin University slipped from its 2016 placing in the 251-300 band to the 301-350 band.
However, Deakin vicechancellor Professor Jane den Hollander said the university had remained within the world’s top 350 universities since 2011, when it climbed from the 351-400 bracket.
“Overall, Deakin has continued to climb on the majority of the three most prestigious global rankings this year, recently consolidating our climb in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) to now sit at 213 in the world,” Ms den Hollander said.
“Individual rankings ebb and flow from time to time, but overall these results show Deakin’s strategy to create an environment that encourages and enables cutting-edge research and academic excellence is on track.
The University of Melbourne remains Australia’s best university, up one spot to 32. But Victoria’s next best, Monash University, slid six spots to equal 80th.
The Australian National University placed 48th, University of Sydney 61st and University of Queensland 65th.
Oxford retained top spot on the rankings, while Cambridge leapfrogged the California Institute of Technology and Stanford University, which secured joint third.
