Cats can be like ‘16 Dogs
GEELONG captain Joel Selwood believes the Cats can go on a Western Bulldogs-style run through AFL finals if they can topple a rampaging Sydney on Friday night.
The Cats take on the Swans, a side they have beaten once in their past six attempts, in a door-die semi-final at the MCG
Staring a straight-sets exit in the eye and having won two finals in nine attempts since the 2011 premiership, Selwood believes victory over the Swans would ignite their campaign.
“It only takes one win to get back on and get this side riding away as we saw the Bulldogs do last year,” he said.
“One big win next weekend could change the whole landscape of things.”
Geelong capitulated in front of 95,000 people at the MCG last Friday night, humbled to the tune of 51 points by a ferocious Richmond.
The Tigers brought the type of heat the Cats have struggled against in the past, and the type of intensity the Swans have ambushed Geelong with in recent attempts.
Selwood came through unscathed, making a successful comeback from the syndesmosis injury he picked up in Geelong’s Round 20 loss to the Swans.
But he was down on his usual output, racking up 19 touches.
Selwood blamed that on being “rusty” rather than any issues with his ankle.
“It was actually pretty good apart from me just being a bit rusty,” he said.
