HOOPS, THEY DID IT AGAIN

- HARRISON TIPPET

AFTER securing its first WNBL match in almost a decade earlier this year, Geelong is again set to come face-to-face with some of the country’s best basketballers.

The Women’s National Basketball League will come to the Geelong Arena on Friday, October 13, with The Melbourne Boomers taking on the Bendigo Spirit.

Driving the Boomers’ 2017/18 campaign will be international star Liz Cambage, the 203cm former WNBA all-star who re-signed with the Boomers following a stint abroad.

“I like that we are coming to Geelong early in the season, and especially up against Bendigo with whom we have a real city versus country rivalry,” Cambage said.

“We’re all very excited about playing again in Geelong, there are so many basketball fans here so it’s important we keep bringing the WNBL to the Arena and showcasing the fantastic athletes we have playing in the league.”

State Minister for Sport and Lara MP John Eren said he was delighted to announce the return of top-level basketball to Geelong.

“We’re proud to be bringing WNBL action back to Geelong — securing another slam dunk event for regional Victoria,” he said. “Hosting the best talent in our regions encourages more locals to get on the court and inspires those who dream of making it to the big time.”

The State Government secured the first WNBL match in Geelong in nine years earlier this year, with the Boomers taking on Adelaide Lighting at the same venue.

“The Geelong Arena and our region is rich in basketball history,” City of Greater Geelong community life director Linda Quinn said.
