POOCH SAVED FROM STICKY SITUATION

- CLAIRE MARTIN

AN affectionate Border Collie has made a speedy recovery after finding himself in a rather sticky situation last month.

Vets at Bannockburn Veterinary Clinic were “blown away” after they found a 17.5cm stick lodged in two year-old Nelson’s throat last month.

His owner, Hayley Dally said she was happy to have him back to normal and explained that it must have happened while they played Nelson’s favourite game of fetch.

“I had a couple of friends over and it was a really nice day,” she said.

“We were down in the back paddock and I was just throwing the stick around with him.

“I think the only way it could have happened was that his jaw was wide open and a bit of the stick broke off and lodged down his throat,” she said.

The Meredith resident said it didn’t take long for her to twig to the fact that her normally active dog wasn’t feeling very well.

“He’d normally never knock you back for a pat, he’s a wonderful dog and very loyal,” Ms Dally said.

“I saw him about 20m away from me and I heard a high pitched noise — it sounded like a goat, it was really bizarre.

“I thought he was just being sooky because I growled at him but it turned out that would have been the point when it (the stick) touched his vocal cords hence the highpitched scream,” she said.

“I just said ‘Come on boy, let’s get in the car — we’re off to the vets.”

Ms Dally said once they arrived at the clinic Nelson sat on the floor and would not let anyone touch him.

But it wasn’t long before vets realised what the problem was.

“They had to anaesthetise him and pull it out,” she said.

“For it to be that far down is pretty rare, they were pretty blown away.”

Ms Dally said she was very thankful to th the vets who helped Nelson.

“Kylie and Peter were the vets and they were just incred- ible — really wonderful,” she said.

“The soccer ball is my best thing to tire him out now.”
