Mix with Crows ‘ferals’? No thanks

- ROWAN FORSTER

LIFETIME Geelong fan Noreen Stapleton will watch her beloved Cats battle the Crows in Adelaide, from the comfort and safety of her home in Leopold.

Mrs Stapleton, 85, said she usually went to Cats games but did not dare venture into enemy territory tonight, after hearing reports of bad behaviour by Crows supporters at other home games.

She described Adelaide Crows fans as “feral”, and said she had heard they had once tried to vandalise Geelong fans’ cars.

“As much as I’d love to watch my Cats, I don’t like Adelaide — they’re just feral,” Mrs Stapleton said.

“My brother John (once) took his car over and we all stayed with the cousin and we were worried the whole time about them attacking our cars and tipping beer from the second deck.”

The passionate fan said she had high hopes the Cats would emerge victorious tonight, to set up a grand final showdown. “It’s been one good match and one bad match on a Friday, but I think we’re due for a win,” Mrs Stapleton said. “If we play like we did last Friday we won’t have any issues.”

The 85-year-old said she had spent many years travelling with the Geelong Cheer Squad interstate on buses, and — for the most part — had loved the experience.

“It’s definitely something they need to do more often,” she said. “It’s too expensive for us to travel on our own.”
