Apollo Bay black spot has gone

- HARRISON TIPPET

A NEW mobile base station west of Apollo Bay will rid the area of a frustrating black spot.

Corangamite Liberal MP Sarah Henderson announced the delivery of a mobile base station for Hordern Vale and Glenaire, near Apollo Bay.

“Three years ago, I convened a community meeting at Hordern Vale and poor or non-existent mobile communications was the biggest concern,” Ms Henderson said.

“Yesterday (Wednesday), I joined residents and Telstra to announce that the new mobile base station was up and running, supported by a new optic fibre backhaul link that replaced a microwave link at the local Telstra exchange.

“Across Corangamite, the Government is funding 18 new mobile base stations. Barongarook, Carlisle River, Yeodene and Kawarren are also active with Gellibrand, Apollo Bay and Steiglitz to be commissioned shortly.”

She said she was disappointed by delays for a mobile base station at Dereel, which she had raised with Telstra. CELEBRATED Australian author Peter Carey will headline this year’s Word for Word National NonFiction Festival in Geelong.

The three-time Miles Franklin Award winner is travelling to Australia from his home in New York for only four appearances nationally.

While he is known for his fiction writing, many of Carey’s highlyacclaimed novels are based on reallife events. Those novels include Oscar and Lucinda, True History of the Kelly Gang, and My Life as a Fake.

Geelong’s Word for Word is Australia’s largest event showcasing nonfiction writing in all forms and has helped establish Geelong as a regional cultural capital.

Chair of the festival advisory committee Cr Margot Smith said the festival’s line-up would encourage thoughtful discussion and debate over the three days of the festival.

“With topics ranging from history, climate change, politics and the art of biography, this year’s festival is set to be the best one ever.”

Other guest speakers will include barrister Julian Burnside QC, novelist Frank Moorhouse and history writer Peter Fitzsimons.

The festival will be held at the Geelong Library & Heritage Centre (The Dome) and will run from November 17-19.
