Women footballers glam it up for the Brownlow
A GEELONG hair stylist was responsible for transforming AFLW players Melissa Hickey (Melbourne) and Katie Brennan (Western Bulldogs) from stars of the field to queens of the red carpet last night, as they swapped footy boots for high heels at the Brownlow Medal count.
Justin Lancaster styled the athletes following a groundbreaking year of women’s football.
Hairstyling has been a 13-year labour of love for Mr Lancaster, who he said he was honoured to make over the women on footy’s big night.
“I love the process of completely transforming someone’s hair and glamorising it. The right hairstyle can just create another side to a person and bring the energy out of them,” he said.
“My signature look is a vintage wave look and having big, luxurious hair with height and volume. It grabs attention and it always makes a statement.”
Brennan enjoyed being pampered after her first AFLW season.
“It was really exciting for us to be noted as athletes at this Brownlow and it’s a genuine recognition we have from the football community,” she said.
Melbourne fashion designer Jason Grech dressed the girls for the evening and said it was a different experience to styling WAGs.
“When I dress these female footballers I’m celebrating their achievement as athletes,” Mr Grech said. “The public will often judge women for how they look so I think this should be about diversity and celebration.”
