Future workers skill up
Surf Coast test run gives students job exposure
TORQUAY students have perfected their coffee art through a specialised training program that aims to get young people job-ready.
More than 100 local students completed mock-interviews in May as part of the Casuarina Future Ambitions program.
Forty students were selected to complete placements at Ocean Grind Coffee, Zeally Bay Sourdough and fashion store Okki.
Those students, all from Surf Coast Secondary College, graduated from the program this week with skills that will appeal to employers.
The Surf Coast Shire coordinated project was supported by the school, Great Ocean Road Coast Committee, local businesses and community groups.
Principal Scott Diamond said the graduates finished the program with a strong business network and were exposed to people who have the skills needed to be successful.
“It was an ideal opportunity for students to be exposed to the entrepreneurial spirit that is such a flavour of the Surf Coast,” Mr Diamond said.
“The opportunities for our students to be part of something they create as their future workplace is very real, and we are fortunate to have so many talented examples of that on our doorstep.
“The students have learnt that it’s possible to build a career around an aspect of your life that you are passionate about.”
Mr Diamond said the graduates finished the program with a strong business network and were exposed to people who have the skills needed to be successful.
“The students are more aware of the employability skills they need to prosper, such as being proactive, communicating effectively and being solution-focused,” he said.
