71-shot win rules the rink

- GRAHAM RAWLINS MIDWEEK PENNANT

QUEENSCLIFF has established an authoritative position after two rounds of GBR Midweek competition with a resounding 71-shot win over Lara on the Rip View greens at Queenscliff.

With the very in-form rink skipped by Henry Dahler taking a 30-shot win on the number one rink, it set the pattern for the Queenscliff whitewash.

The Barry Close rink then consolidated the number two rink with a further 25-shot win, which then left the Kevin Thompson rink to win by 16 shots in a top display of bowling that puts Queenscliff on top of the ladder by two points over second-placed Ocean Grove 1.

Highton laid down a significant challenge to Ocean Grove 1 challenging gamely before going down by only two shots overall.

The Highton green was running well as the competition across the three rinks was very tight.

The Lorrianne Kirk (O/G) rink scraped home by two shots against Graeme Ott (H/T) while the second Ocean Grove rink skipped by Gary Burkett took the points against Dianne Monk by six shots. The deciding rink was a close tussle with Ray McCorkell (O/G) taking the match points by six shots over Faye Richardson. But all to no avail as Ocean Grove 1 held on to a close and exciting two-shot win.

Ocean Grove 2 established itself in third position on the ladder with a 13-shot win over City of Geelong.

The win was established by the third rink win skipped by Marlene Sutton (O/G) with a commanding 26-12 win over the Gerry Dean rink. It was tight bowling throughout the day with both sides working hard for winning points.

Geelong Cement won its first game of the season with an impressive 32-shot win over Portarlington on the wellprepared green at Cement. The day was highlighted by the 16shot victory on rink one with Julie Connolly skipping her rink well. The return of the Skowronski duo did not give Portarlington the best outcome it was looking for.

The Torquay 1 combination led by example posting a wellearned 28 shot win over Leopold. After dropping the first rink by 10 shots the Torquay teams rallied with its second rink (skipped by Karen Harrington) winning by a resounding 21 shots and its third rink (skipped by Alan Sampson) winning by 17 shots. The first win of the season puts Torquay into seventh place on the ladder on 14 points.

In the leading skippers positions it is Henry Dahler (Queenscliff 1) with Barrie Close (Queenscliff), Kevin Thompson (Queenscliff 1), Marlene Sutton (Ocean Grove 2), Lorraine Kirk (Ocean Grove 1), Jim Rogan (Ocean Grove 2) and Kerry Gooley (City of Geelong) leading the performances.

In Division 2 Bannockburn continued on its winning way with a 21-shot win over Clifton Springs 2. The highlight was the close one-shot win by Point Lonsdale over Geelong RSL. The Point established an early break as RSL then set about winning back shots after the lunch break. On rink one the battle was close. Point Lonsdale established an early break and went to lunch confidently. After the break it was RSL working hard to get back into the game with Point Lonsdale winning only two rinks in afternoon play. RSL was able to sneak home by one shot to take the rink points. On rink three the Point Lonsdale group led throughout to take the rink by a solid 16 shots — however on rink two it was a real battle. Point Lonsdale led well before a brave RSL fightback. RSL then dropped 13 shots on two non-consecutive ends to give the Point the win.

In the leading skippers positions it is Graham Jeffery (Torquay 2), Andrew Walker (Belmont 1), Heather Phillips (Bannockburn 1), Nick Oakes (Geelong 1), Janine Merryfull (Bannockburn 1), Gerry Sunderland (RSL) and Lynette Sutton (RSL) leading the performances. LADDERS, OTHER RESULTS: PAGE 29
