Wannabe cop takes it to limit
Student loses licence
A WANNABE policeman lost his driver’s licence for a year yesterday after admitting he drove almost 50km/h over the speed limit.
Teenager Matthew Moussa was clocked doing 119km/h in a 70km/h zone on Murradoc Rd at St Leonards in a friend’s car on June 11.
Geelong Magistrates’ Court heard yesterday the 19-yearold was returning home to the suburb of Delahey, northwest of Melbourne, from a short holiday on the Bellarine Peninsula, and was unfamiliar with the road and its speed limit.
Magistrate Frank Jones said the area was a known speed trap.
“Ever since I was a 19-year- old that road . . . has drawn attention of police, and you’re the one who fell for it,” Mr Jones said.
The magistrate was told the young driver was studying criminal justice at TAFE with a view to becoming a police officer.
He said the offence was serious enough to demand a conviction, but told Moussa that outcome was unlikely to cruel his career ambition.
“I don’t think speeding stops you from being a police officer . . . he’ll probably end up in the traffic section,” Mr Jones quipped.
“It’s not a great stain on your character . . . as long as everyone learns from their mistakes.”
The defendant’s licence was suspended for a year, and he was fined $600.
