Big V rep like father
HE is the pint-sized son of a gun.
And 22 years after his father wore the famous Big V, Oliver Peake will represent Victoria.
The 11-year-old has been selected in the School Sport Victoria team to contest the School Sport Australian Championships in Barooga, NSW, from January 5-12.
He follows in the footsteps of his father, Clinton, who made his first-class debut for Victoria in 1995.
Clinton played nine games for the Vics, making 303 runs at an average of 20.20.
He was also a champion batsman at Victorian Premier Cricket club Geelong, belting 8850 runs at more than 40 in 252 matches.
Oliver, a pupil at St Mary’s Primary School, secured his place in the 13-man squad following a “great performance” during the selection process in June.
“The students participated in a series of trial sessions and games to be selected to represent the School Sport Victoria State Team,” SSV team project manager Ian Landy said.
“Many past School Sport Victoria team members have gone on to compete at national and international competitions, including Olympic Games, world championships and Commonwealth Games.
“So here’s hoping that Oliver and their Victoria teammates can achieve their personal goals at a national level to win the Australian title and that Oliver may be representing Australia in the years to come.”
Oliver, a stylish top-order batsman at South Barwon, is earmarked as a future star.
In 11 matches for the Swans’ under-13 Royce team last season, the left-hander scored 195 runs at a startling average of 48.75.
He was not out in seven knocks, passing 30 twice and contributing scores of 29, 28, 16 and 15.
The youngster also took seven scalps at 10.14.
Stylish South Barwon junior cricketer Oliver Peake will make his Victorian debut this summer, two decades after his father represented Victoria in the Sheffield Shield. The 11-year-old has been selected in the School Sport Victoria team to contest the national championships in New South Wales.
