Irene fosters love and trust in kids

- CHAD VAN ESTROP

THE swift transformation of a child’s life from desolation to delirium is the driving force behind the work of foster carer Irene Bird.

Mum to a 14-year-old foster child, Ms Bird says her role has helped her intervene at a crossroads in her daughter’s life.

“Seeing her learn at school and become more confident has been really pleasing for us. She’s a lot happier (after coming into our care) because she is part of a family,” Ms Bird said.

In the face of growing demand for foster carers, the Lethbridge mum is encouraging the public to consider becoming foster parents or opening their homes for respite care.

“The difference you can make for someone who needs it is immense. It’s a chance to really help children who are vulnerable.”

According to child service provider Key Assets, Victoria is experiencing a shortage of foster carers, with more than 14,000 children needing foster families. Following the success of the first four months with her foster daughter, Ms Bird and partner Steve Cornes have decided to open their home to more foster children.

“The demand for carers is there. We can tell that by the number of requests we are get- ting to give children a home.”

Barwon Child, Youth & Family Acting CEO Max Broadley said across the Barwon region there was a critical shortage of foster carers.

“There are so many children who need care in our community, so we hope to inspire others to join us in making the Barwon region stronger.

“I’d encourage anyone considering becoming a foster carer to contact BCYF,” Mr Broadley said last month.

He said foster carers gave children a second chance at life by creating a welcoming environment in their homes.

“Foster carers play an important role in giving children and young people, who are unable to live at home with their own family, a safe, loving and nurturing environment.”
