Beep, beep: Bareena coming through

- GRAHAM RAWLINS PREMIER BOWLS

BAREENA has shot to the top of the Premier League ladder after a well-earned win over City of Geelong on the Drumcondra green on Saturday.

With the Ben Wilding rink of Drew Young (lead), Tony Evans (second) and David Priddle (third) taking a 15-shot victory over the Craig Elliott rink, the winning pattern was established.

However, City of Geelong didn’t make life easy for Bareena, working tirelessly to fight back to take two rinks and nearly the match.

But the John O’Donnell rink settled matters — its narrow four-shot win over the Aaron Hyatt rink sealing the points and catapulting Bareena to the competition summit by one point over Ocean Grove, which is also unbeaten after two rounds.

The Grove group travelled up to the BMS green in Ballarat and fought out a solid 16-2 (38-shot) win.

The Mick West rink took a 14-shot win, while the Chris Hodges rink continued its good form with another 22shot win. Victoria burst back on to the scene with its clean sweep win over Queenscliff by a comfortable 17 shots.

Bowling to the conditions, Victoria found line and length early while Queenscliff was late out of the blocks.

The Victoria rink of Brian Doyle (lead), Darren Britt (second), Stephen Britt (third) and Wayne Lynch (skip) set the scene with a 12-shot win over the Steve Sullivan rink.

Lara upset Sebastopol to record its first win of the season by 36-shots.

Lara took full advantage of the home green knowledge.

The top winning rinks, skipped by Leigh Butcher (15shots) and Leigh Hanlon (20shots), paved the way with excellent draw bowling over the 100 ends.

Eastern Park opened its account for the season with a nine-shot win over Webbcona. Playing on the top grass green at Eastern Park, the home side was made to work hard.

Next week: BMS v Eastern Park; Ocean Grove v Lara; Webbcona v Victoria; Bareena v Sebastopol; Queenscliff v City of Geelong.
