HIGH TIMES ROLL ON

- GRAHAM RAWLINS DIVISION 1

THE two Highton sides will face off this weekend in an early season top-of-the-table clash, as both sides further extended their dominant starts to the season on Saturday.

The Highton sides have started the 2017-18 campaign in fine style, already opening up a healthy gap at the top of the ladder from third-placed Torquay after only two rounds of the home-and-away-season.

On Saturday, the Highton 2 side showed Lara a clear set of heels with an eight-shot win, while the Highton 1 side made the going a lot easier with its 33-shot win over Drysdale.

Their dominance is also reflected in their strong position on the leading skips table, with six of the top nine playing for either Highton 1 or 2 and three skips coming from each of the teams.

Ron Imanse and his rink again paved the way for the Highton 2 win with its 10-shot victory over Lara’s Colin McPherson rink.

In the Highton 1 win over Drysdale, it was the solid play from the division’s leading skipper rink of Stewart Williams (skip), Clive Dawson (lead), Jason Armstrong (second) and Ray Wilkinson (third) that led the day with its 27-shot victory.

Torquay used its home green advantage to the fullest in a comfortable 40-shot win over Ocean Grove.

With the in-form rink skipped by Daryl Kitchin winning by 17-shots it was the consolidated effort from the other three Torquay rinks that saw it take a clean sweep.

The Alan Sampson rink showed good form with its polished 10-shot win over the Chris Deppeler rink while the Gary Banks and Robin Chambers rinks were busy taking a six and seven-shot win respectively.

St Leonards held down fifth position on the ladder, a solitary point behind fourthplaced Drysdale, with its 16-2 (47-shot) win over Belmont.

Geelong Cement took the honours by a single shot over Portarlington in a game that went right down to the wire.

Round 3 of Division One will be played next Saturday.

NEXT WEEK: Highton 1v Highton 2; Belmont v Drysdale; St Leonards v Torquay; Geelong Cement v Ocean Grove 2; Lara v Portarlington.
