Pickering hits the spot for Barrabool

- BARRABOOL LITTLE RIVER TOM HUSSEY BPCA

KANE Pickering has skittled Little River’s middle and lower-order to lead Barrabool to their first win of the BPCA season.

The captain-coach claimed his first five-wicket haul since the 2014-15 season, propelling his side to a 72-run victory at Barrabool Oval with figures of 5-37.

“I just managed to hit the right spot a few times and the ball was moving around a fair bit so yeah pretty happy to get a five-for,” Pickering said.

Little River managed only 125 runs in reply to Barrabool’s 197 after the middle order combination of Aaron Pickering (66 runs), Nathan Findlay (34) and David Grigg (37) combined for 137 of the side’s runs on Saturday’s first day’s play.

“I think our middle order got us the win definitely yesterday, we were going pretty slow at the top, they bowled pretty well, bowled to their fields,” Pickering said.

“The ground was quite slow and Aaron Pickering, David Grigg and Nathan Findlay came out and really got on with the job and got us to (almost) 200, which was a pretty good score … that was probably the part I was most pleased with.”

A smattering of rain just prior to the start of yesterday’s play meant that the Barrabool bowling attack was up against it from the get-go with a slippery ball, but worked impressively to contain the Little River top-order, with openers Grant Cheeseman (20) and Brad Phillips (10) falling first.

Aaron Pickering then picked up the wicket of Blayne Sharp to have Little River at 3-66, before brother Kane struck with the first of his five, claiming Little River counterpart Nathan Kenyon for just five runs.
