Chamber members’ spat over spa stance

- SHANE FOWLES

APOLLO BAY Chamber of Commerce has been forced to cancel its AGM after its members voiced outrage at the body’s support for a $70 million spa resort.

The massive tourism venture has drawn strong criticism in the Great Ocean Road town, with an estimated 130 people at public meeting last week calling for the proposal to be withdrawn.

The Chamber of Commerce quickly declared it supported the project, believing it would provide spin-off opportunities for local businesses.

“The Chamber is concerned about some aspects of the development, including road access to the site and the availability of staff accommodation,” it said last week.

“However, overall it is very supportive of the project.”

But it has been forced to backtrack on its definitive stance following extensive feedback.

“In the last week it has become clear that there are significant concerns among our members regarding the executive committee’s position on the proposed Barham River resort,” the Chamber said.

After cancelling Monday’s AGM, the Chamber will now hold a special general meeting on November 13, with a focus on discussing Oceans United Investment Group’s proposal.

“Members will be invited to express their views, move and pass a resolution in accordance with the majority vote. This resolution will then become the Chamber’s position.”

The Barham Valley development — which includes a 180-room hotel and 82 villas — has already secured the support of Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism.

The project has been modelled on the traditional European spa hotel, and would also include two restaurants, a bar, retail outlets, wellness centre and indoor swimming pool.
