Drysdale feeling the heat

- MATT FLAPPER DIVISION 1

DRYSDALE coach Cal Inderberg has put it on his senior players to lead the side out of trouble against St Leonard’s on Saturday.

Inderberg’s 16 have won just one of three this campaign and risk slipping back from the pack against an in-form St Leonard’s outfit.

Having improved his list over the off-season, Inderberg said the search for winning combinations continued.

“We are a relatively newlook side with Ash Rees, Kel Wiffen and Luke Wiffen all playing the position of third for the first time; in effect it takes time to gel as a playing group,” Inderberg said.

“The buck stops with the senior players of our group. We need them to step up, lead the way for our younger players and St Leonard’s at home will be just the time to do that.”

Last year’s Geelong Bowls Region Champion of Champions Rhys Jeffs will be looking for his third win, as will John Fry, while Inderberg will be keen to lead from the front chasing his second win of the season.

Meanwhile, St Leonard’s coach Alf Vella knows the importance of winning away from home.

A former Commonwealth Games representative for Malta, Vella took the reins at St Leonard’s this year and will use all his experience to fire the troops as they look to consolidate last week’s win against Torquay.

“Winning all home games won’t make the top four, we must be able to produce away from home,” Vella said.

“Drysdale are a top-four side, we know that, we have the opportunity to test ourselves and use them as a benchmark to see where we are at.”
