County ace arrives

McDonald’s pleading gets Cobb to the Cats

- ALEX OATES

ANDREW McDonald had been nagging him for years.

And, more than once, Josh Cobb had agreed to pull on a Geelong guernsey.

“Finally, I’m here,” Cobb said yesterday, having arrived in Geelong after a 24-hour door-to-door flight from his home in England.

“Andrew McDonald has been trying to get me over here for a couple of years.

“We were together at Leicester, where we won the Twenty20, and I’ve always agreed to it every year but never actually done it.

“I’m keen to enjoy the lifestyle, play some good cricket and have a good time.”

An English county veteran, Cobb is a welcome sight at Kardinia Park.

He has hit 4503 runs in 113 matches and will bolster Gee- long’s brittle middle order.

“I felt in good form in the last six weeks of the season,” he said.

“I got some important runs but I never really kicked on and got a big score and that’s what I’ll be looking to do here.”

A powerful striker, he has built his reputation as a dangerous T20 batsman and occasional off-spinner.

The right-hander hits the ball with force, demonstrated by his unbeaten 148 against Middlesex at Lord’s in 2008 when he become Leicester’s youngest century maker.

He prefers to bat in the top three, but will make an appearance at No.5 for the Cats this weekend.

“I’m definitely more of a white ball player,” Cobb said.

“I like to take the game to the opposition and entertain.

“My four-day cricket is probably my weakest point and I’m looking to work on it.”
