No stress, just 15 exams in one month

-

GEMMA Crosby isn’t intimidated by the 15 exams she must pass over the next month to receive her International Baccalaureate.

The year 12 Kardinia International College says the significant two-year workload has prepared her for the onslaught of exams.

The internationally recognised VCE alternative is offered by a small number of schools in the region, including Kardinia International College and Geelong Grammar School.

Students must study a second language, a maths, a science subject and a first language, as well as complete 120 creativity, action and service (CAS) hours, theory of knowledge and an extended essay.

Gemma, 17, who juggled her studies with deputy captain duties, will take exams in literature, psychology, biology, chemistry, French and maths.

“IB looked like a bit of a challenge and I guess I’m always willing to take on a challenge,” she said.

As part of the CAS hours Gemma participated in the school musical, headed up a Cancer Council Relay for Life team and tutored Karen refugees each week. She will volunteer in Borneo this summer. Gemma hopes to study a double degree in Science and Global Studies.

“I’ve really enjoyed IB because you’re learning so many different skills, meeting different people and being forced to be organised and maintain balance,” Gemma said.

Principal David Fitzgerald said 46 year 12 students were enrolled in IB and 163 students would complete VCE.

“The students have done the hard work,” he said. Now they need to concentrate, maintain balance, sleep, rest and study.”
