Charity of books spreads the love

- OLIVIA SHYING

SCORES of primary school pupils can’t wait to pore their eyes over hundreds of new books and fall in love with reading all over again.

Whittington Primary School pupils could not contain their excitement when close to 200 new books arrived at the school’s temporary library recently — with class favourites including Roald Dahl’s Matilda among the stack of classics.

Grade 3/4 teacher Dane Noble said eager pupils had helped select the range of books donated by Dymocks Children’s Charities.

Prep pupils Charli Sanderson and Rylie Brideson, both six, could not wait to immerse themselves in engaging picture books including Mr Chicken Goes To Paris.

Mr Noble said the new books would help children to further develop a love for reading.

“If you don’t love reading, then you’re probably not going to learn it,” Mr Noble said.

“We might’ve had one copy of a book, but they really wanted to read it with their friends.

“Having an extra copy means they can really engage and enjoy reading as a group.

“We want them to love reading. Curriculum wise we also need help them develop personal preferences.”

The donation, worth more than $2700, aims to encourage children to participate in the annual Premier’s Reading Challenge.
