BARWON HEADS BOUNCED

- LACHIE YOUNG

HAMLYN Park is back on the Tennis Geelong Section 1 winners’ list with a comfortable 4.0.34 to 2.0.20 victory over Barwon Heads on Saturday.

The two sides were evenly matched in the opening sets, taking one apiece, however the 6-1 win to Robert Arzanovski and Andrew Frost was a sign of things to come.

It was in the middle two sets that Hamlyn Park flexed its muscle, with Arzanovski and captain Jozef Horvat combining for a 6-3 victory over Alex Boyle and Peter Havelberg, and Frost and Robert Lazic winning 6-0 against Ben Dew and Jason Ah Sam.

The final two sets were again split but by then the damage had been done, with Horvat saying it was a great feeling to be 2-2 after four rounds.

“We were pretty evenly matched against them and having played against a couple of those guys last season I knew we’d match up OK, which we did,” he said.

“We got off to a good start and I think in the third and fourth sets we played a bit more consistently.

“That set the win up for us and in the back of our minds we thought if we could win four sets to two overall it would put us back close to them on the ladder.”

In other matches across the round, Newcomb proved far too strong for Geelong East United, claiming a 6.0.36 to 0.0.8 win at Breakwater Reserve and taking first spot on the ladder in the process.

St Mary’s had a narrow victory away from home over Wandana Heights, winning 3.0.28 to 3.0.24, while Ocean Grove and Surf Coast played out a thrilling draw at Ocean Grove.

Scores were level right through the match and with the final two sets finishing at 6-3, both teams ended on 3.0.27 to share the points.
