Competition leader Highton number two by name only

- MATT FLAPPER DIVISION ONE

INCREDIBLE depth at Highton sees the club’s number two side perched at the top of the table with a full head of steam.

Captain of the Highton 2s, Neil Jones, will welcome back skipper Max Staggard to the team for its blockbuster matchup with Drysdale tomorrow.

Jones said he was not surprised to be sitting in top spot.

“We recruited well this year, added a lot of depth and we are extremely lucky to have two strong division one teams,” he said.

“We have nothing to fear against any division one team and we know we can match it with any of them.

“Both our teams are strong, we are both aiming for top four and ultimately have a big chance.”

Meanwhile, back to back wins against St Leonard’s and Torquay has certainly given Drysdale coach Cal Inderberg something to smile about.

“We are very happy with our past two weeks, Torquay especially have been a bogey side for us in recent years so it’s been a great boost for all the players and the mood has been terrific,” he said.

“Every game for us is an opportunity to show our improvement.

“Saturday against Highton 2 will be no different, they have been in good form and are the top side, a win away from home will be the ultimate morale booster.”

Inderberg will be looking to fellow skipper Brad Prior to find that extra bit this week.

“We want a big performance from Brad, we know he is up for it, it only takes one bowl for Brad to fire up, he can possess a massive amount of positive energy and we want to see that this week,” he said.

Highton 1 travels to Geelong Cement, Lara hosts Torquay, Ocean Grove will aim to get back on the winners’ list against Belmont and Portarlington will look for win number two against St Leonard’s in other Division One matches.
