GEELONG’S FAVOURITE BABY NAMES

HOSPITAL REVEALS GEELONG’S TOP NAMES

- JAIMEE WILKENS

GEELONG parents are following their own trends when it comes to naming their new bubs, according to St John of God Hospital Geelong.

The company recently released the top-10 girl names for babies born at its hospitals all over Australia, with one name making the local cut.

Out of Geelong, parents seemed keen to give their little bundles of joy a royal start to life, with Charlotte topping the St John of God national list. Other popular names on the national list included Sophie, Olivia, Isabella and Mia.

Locally, Chloe was No.1 for St John of God in 2017, which sits at No.6 on the national list.

One baby blessed with the popular name is Melissa Di Pasquale’s little Chloe, who is in the special care nursery after being born at only 27 weeks. “I chose the name because it sounded nice,” Ms Di Pasquale said.

“I’ve never met a bad Chloe.”

Chloe has spent seven weeks in special care at both the Royal Women’s and St John of God hospitals, and is hopefully going home to her family at Bell Post Hill soon.

Mums and dads of Geelong decided to keep it traditional this year, shunning the weird and eccentric naming trends for the ever-favourite classics like Emily, Audrey, Annie and Harriet.

Critical care project nurse Lisa Reid noted an interesting trend in names around the hospital this year.

“We’ve noticed a lot of names this year that could be for either a boy or a girl, like Frankie,” she said.

“One interesting name I remember was a baby Yumi, whose parents loved Japan.”

Frankie topped the Geelong boys’ list, followed by Theodore, Lachlan, Hudson and Hugo.

St John of God has delivered close to 700 babies so far this year, including 13 sets of twins. Geelong hospital has delivered around 2200, but does not keep a record of name trends.
