Skips lead top club to comfortable win

- GRAHAM RAWLINS DIVISION 1

HIGHTON (2) showed its depth and versatility to maintain top position in Division 1 table with a 27-shot home win over Drysdale on Saturday.

Highton captain Neil Jones and his rink of Belinda Koek (lead), Chris Hodges (second) and Ian Anderson (third) took a well-planned win over the coach of Drysdale Callum Inderberg’s rink by six shots.

Jones is second on the skips ladder, trailing by a point and sharing the same number of wins as fellow Highton (2) skip in Ron Imanse.

The talented Imanse has shown a new approach to his bowls following a season off and moving to a new club.

The John Jackson rink’s win over the versatile Brad Prior rink by 10 shots underlined the depth and quality of the ladder leader.

Highton (1) climbed to second spot with an 18-shot win over Geelong Cement.

The visitors never looked back after seizing the initiative early on a good running grass green at Cement.

The Nick Bell rink of Doug McGregor (lead), Ray Wilkinson (second) and Jason Armstrong (third) exemplified the Highton effort with its 14 shot-win over the Gary Connolly rink.

Torquay jumped from seventh into the four with a 52- shot win over Lara. Torquay skip Alan Sampson took a new lead (Joe Issell) and third (Rob Grubb) into his rink and recorded a 23-shot victory over the James Derham rink.

Sampson has moved to top on the skips ladder with five wins, one draw and a shot difference of 53.

Portarlington notched its second win, over St Leonards, to close on the top four.

It was an impressive clean sweep to give Portarlington a clear 30-shot victory. All rinks made good contributions with the top win being Wayne Page (lead), Phil Schmidt (second), Barry Hirth (third) and Michael Dennis (skip).

Ocean Grove held third with a 17-shot win over Belmont, with the highlight being the 14-shot win by the Alan Callow rink of Andrew Wright (lead), Stephen Parry (second) and Peter Jolley (third) over the Ray Farley rink.
