Dunn makes clutch putt for crown

-

OPEN Championship king Brad Dunn claimed another victory on Saturday, holding his nerve to claim the Barwon Valley 36-hole event.

East Geelong’s Dunn was locked in a head-to-head battle with Barwon Valley’s David Foster over the final nine holes and made a clutch 3m par putt on the 36th hole to snare a one-shot win.

“It got a bit close. I knew what he was doing and he knew what I was doing, so it was a good battle,” he said.

“I was a bit tired at the end and I had to hole a 10ft putt to get him on the last hole.

“I played with David, we were the last group. In the afternoon he played really well when the wind got up.

“It kind of was (like match play towards the end) because no one else had better than 74 out of the other bunch.”

Dunn said he “didn’t hit it that flash” over the 36 holes, but managed to get it together when it counted.

“I just scored well. I just ended up being in some decent positions, I didn’t hit the ball fantastically well,” he said.

“But sometimes you don’t have to hit it that well to score good. If you miss in the right spot and hole a couple of putts then you can get away with it.

“I was two over through six, but then I played my two best holes for the day on seven and eight in the morning. I had back-to-back eagles on them.

“I had one-under for the day, but had four-under on those two holes.”

Dunn, who has won the Barwon Valley open three times, was full of praise for the condition of the course.

“I’ve never seen the course that good. The greens are slick,” he said.
