Region to push case in capital

- SHANE FOWLES

INFRASTRUCTURE projects will be on the agenda when Geelong region council leaders head to Canberra next week.

G21 chief executive Elaine Carbines and council representatives will arrive in the nation’s capital on Monday to meet department officials to discuss a range of investment opportunities.

“The delegation (will) reinforce the merits and importance of key projects with decision makers in Canberra; both politicians and officials,” Ms Carbines said. “(It) follows on from the full G21 Board delegation in March this year, which met with the Prime Minister and Opposition leader and a range of ministers and shadow ministers.”

Discussions are expected to focus on: A CITY Deal for Geelong and the Great Ocean Road; AVALON Airport; NBN rollout; GEELONG Convention Centre; APOLLO Bay Harbour Precinct; and, EAST-WEST Geelong traffic upgrades.

“It will be a whirlwind one day visit of wall-to-wall meetings, however, past experience tells us that these meetings are invaluable for their insights and will pay dividends to the G21 region in the future,” Ms Carbines said.

Ms Carbines will be joined by CEOs Keith Baillie (Surf Coast), Lenny Jenner (Queenscliff), Rod Nicholls (Golden Plains), Robert Dobrzynski (Colac Otway) and Geelong’s investment and attraction director Brett Luxford.
