Brady’s dry argument

Marathon runner and weighty ‘mate’ highlight mental health issues

MEG Dryin, Dryer Tuck, Dryer Man Sam, Jerry MaDryer and his current favourite, Dryan Lara.

Armstrong Creek’s Brady Curran has some interesting names for his marathon running partner, who he will literally carry for the whole 42.195km.

Mr Curran will have a clothes dryer, at more than 20kg, strapped into a customised harness/backpack for a marathon along the Surf Coast on November 29.

The exercise will raise funds and awareness for the men’s health charity Movember Foundation.

“We have all this information available to us constantly so I need to do something that stands out and acts as a talking point to help promote men’s health,” he said.

The dryer will also act as a conversation starter for mental health, which is something the Surf Coast Shire human resources co-ordinator said men need further encouragement to talk about.

“At some stage in our lives the vast majority of men will carry something around with them, it may not be as noticeable as a dryer on their back so we may not see it or know it’s there,” he said.

“That’s why it’s important to look out for your mates, your brother, your dad and ask them how they are going if you think something isn’t right.”

Mr Curran is no stranger to feats of endurance, tackling the Kokoda Track earlier this year and riding a bike 270km from Halls Gap to Torquay for Movember last year.

His inspiration for taking part in Movember stems from his father’s tragic mental health issues.

“When I was 16 my dad took his own life, after a period where he ‘self-medicated’ himself with alcohol after he was abused as a child by members of the Catholic Church in Ballarat.

“Looking over dad’s class photos now there are only a couple of men still alive (out of the entire class). This is beyond horrific.”
