Salute to red army

-

GEELONG is building a rising reputation as a centre for social insurance.

It began with the arrival of the Transport Accident Commission.

The TAC’s success has helped secure a further two agencies that will soon be neighbours in new Malop St headquarters — the National Disability Insurance Scheme and WorkSafe.

But while our corporate credentials of caring for the less fortunate are growing, the Geelong community’s charitable character has always been so.

Geelong people like to look after their own.

And in the well-organised and festive annual event Run Geelong, we have a brilliant outlet to help those in need.

Cotton On’s event, now in its ninth year, shows no sign of running out of puff.

With all registration fees going to Barwon Health’s children’s ward, the red army was again out in force, numbering 10,400.

They took in some of the city’s most scenic locations via either a 1km, 6km or 12km route.

There were DJs, cheer groups, brass bands and vocal supporters lining the streets, providing strong encouragement to those challenged by the warm conditions.

Before and after they pounded the pavement, people enjoyed the fun-filled carnival atmosphere of the event village.

An estimated $340,000 was raised, which will be directed towards Barwon Health’s paediatric rehabilitation services.

The popularity of the event lies not only in its enjoyment, but in the satisfaction that residents derive from helping those kids who have spent too much of their short lives in hospital.

We are motivated by the memory of kids like Bryce McKiernan, who sadly passed last August.

And we are driven by those like three-year-old Keisha Low, who was all smiles yesterday.

Congratulations to all involved, and long may it continue.
