RETHINK REQUIRED ON CBD CLOTHING STORE NAME

THERE is a women’s clothing store in Geelong’s CBD with the unusual and somewhat provocative name of “Strumpet”.

A strumpet is defined, in my dictionary, as a female prostitute or promiscuous woman.

Hard to believe that a more appropriate, respectful and respectable name could not have been chosen.

One wonders what was in the mind(s) of those who chose the name.

Is their client base Geelong’s “Ladies of the Night” or sex workers, generally, or are they seeking to attract clients who view themselves as promiscuous?

Or are they merely trying to be controversial? It may be no coincidence that when I last passed by the store, it was empty. A change of name may be a wise commercial decision. Michael J Gamble, Belmont

GEELONG NEEDED SOME NEW FACES IN COUNCIL

AGREE with P. Moore (GA 17/11). Our chance to look forward has come to an end with the election of those sacked former councillors with Bruce Harwood as elected mayor. Having been through those toxic years where they should have done something to fix the problem it would have been better to have those new faces in to lead us into the future. Voters got what they wished for. Peter Lowe, St Albans Park

BILL WOULD TREAT ALL MARRIAGES THE SAME

YOUR report says that I will move an amendment to the Dean Smith marriage Bill to allow civil celebrants to refuse to marry same sex couples. This is only part of the story. My amendment will also allow civil celebrants to refuse to marry heterosexual couples, and so will cater for any celebrant who wants to specialise in same-sex marriages.

My amendment will allow a businessperson to refuse to service same sex marriages, as well as allowing a businessperson to refuse to service heterosexual marriages.

Under my amendment, only the Government would have no choice — a public servant working at a marriage registry would be obliged to carry out all marriages. Liberal Democrats Senator David Leyonhjelm

FORMER COUNCILLORS SHOULD NOT BE BACK

PETER Moore’s article (GA 17/11) is spot on — ‘Back to the future’, re Bruce Harwood. I was amazed that the Government didn’t bar former councillors from running. The people to blame are his electorate who voted him in and to top it off, to be mayor he had almost half of his former mates from his previous council to vote for him. At least he won’t need to travel overseas. He has done all that in his previous role as councillor. Like Peter Moore, I will have to just wait and see if we get more of the same. Bob Thompson, Ocean Grove

THE OLD BOYS CLUB HAS GOT TOGETHER AGAIN

GOOD article Peter Moore (GA 17/11). I couldn’t agree more. What right have these sacked councillors to stand again — not only that but one to be the mayor.

Sounds a bit like Old Boys Club to me.

What is the saying — “a leopard never changes its spots.” I guess we will have to wait and see. Kathleen Jeffersen, St Albans Park
