Minister called in
Apollo Bay resort bid
“This proposal is a significant one. It’s bigger than Colac Otway, it’s a large proposal that would have regional impacts.” COLAC OTWAY SHIRE MAYOR JOE MCCRACKEN
PLANNING Minister Richard Wynne will be asked to consider the merits of a proposed $70 million tourist resort in Apollo Bay.
The Colac Otway Shire has decided to call in the controversial application and hand authority for the decisionmaking to the State Government.
The proposal, for 180 rooms, 82 villas and a range of ancillary facilities, has attracted 155 objections and 10 letters of support.
Mayor Joe McCracken said a ministerial call-in could potentially hasten the turnaround time for a decision.
“This proposal is a significant one. It’s bigger than Colac Otway, it’s a large proposal that would have regional impacts,” he said.
“This proposal is of state significance, so it makes sense to have the minister call it in.”
The move will lead to the appointment of an indepen- dent advisory panel, which will hear from the proponent, objectors and others with an interest in the proposal.
“This will give everyone plenty of time to consider their thoughts and strongly advocate their respective positions.”
Cr McCracken said the council had yet to form a position on the proposal, which would be built on land owned by former mayor Frank Buchanan on Barham River Rd.
“We’re waiting for all the information and the detail. Only then will councillors be in a position to consider the proposal in its entirety,” he said.
