Torquay faces stiff home test

- MATT FLAPPER DIVISION 1

TORQUAY will aim to keep its undefeated record at home intact when it hosts the competition benchmark Highton 2 tomorrow.

Captain Ashley Prosser believes his side will be ready to step up against the Division 1 ladder leader to cause the upset of the summer.

“We love playing at home and we love winning at home,” Prosser said.

“We believe we can match it with any side in the league, our best is good enough but we need to narrow the gap between our best and our worst to be a real contender.”

It is a long season and Torquay is settling into its stride with three wins from six starts.

However, Highton 2 faced its toughest challenge so far this year at home last week and was too good for Drysdale, saluting by 27 shots.

Winning form is good form but the true test for Highton will be to adapt to the greens of the Australian bowling club of the year.

“We rely on our skips a fair bit,” Prosser said.

“Alan Sampson and Gary Banks are always leading the way, but in saying that, the rest of the group need to play their role and provide the support to these blokes to ensure our skips are not carrying the load themselves.

“If we can do this, we will be hard to beat.”

Drysdale will be keen to bounce back at home against Portarlington, while Belmont should be too consistent at home when it faces Geelong Cement.

Highton 1 will have too much firepower for Lara, while another match with interest will be fifth-placed St Leonards at home against third-placed Ocean Grove.
