Building up local jobs

Boost for regional GROW initiative

- SHANE FOWLES

ONE of Geelong’s biggest construction firms has signed up to a program to help disadvantaged job seekers across the region.

Kane Constructions has joined the G21 Region Opportunities for Work initiative (GROW), as it begins the $37.5 million redevelopment of the Geelong Performing Arts Centre.

The redevelopment of the city’s premier theatre space is expected to support more than 100 local jobs.

GROW encourages organisations to buy goods and services that contribute to the local community, and inject capital into businesses and not-for-profit enterprises in targeted suburbs.

Give Where You Live CEO Bill Mithen said there were more than 70 local signatories to the GROW Compact.

“We are delighted that they will use their purchasing power to create jobs and opportunities for people from disadvantaged backgrounds,” he said.

Member for Lara John Eren said GROW was a collaborative effort to tackle unemployment.

“Local procurement is an important way to drive economic growth and job creation in our region.”

The GPAC upgrade will transform the 36-year-old centre with a new and accessible entrance, expanded facilities and new foyers, bars, rehearsal studios and creative spaces.
