Gearing up for big one

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE SPEEDWAY

AUSTRALIA’S best speedcar drivers will descend on Avalon Raceway tonight for the 27th running of the Beasley Family Memorial.

Dedicated to Arthur, Stud and Alf Beasley, who were pioneers of the sport in Australia, the Beasley Family Memorial draws the best of the best just six weeks out from the Victorian Speedcar titles.

Lara driver David “Alfie” Alford will be one of the many in action, set to pit his skills in a super hot field.

“The Beasley is pretty big. It’s pretty big every year for us speedcar drivers,” Alford said.

“We probably all put it up there as one of the top ones.”

It will be Alford’s second Beasley after moving across to speedcars following three years driving wingless.

His season hasn’t begun as he would have liked, but a little bit of luck can quickly change that.

“We’ve probably done three or four (races this campaign). I raced the Darlington two or three weeks ago; we were running fourth or fifth but ended up finishing on the infield,” he said.

“The Beasley will be tough with the amount of competi- tors we’ve got. There will be 20-something cars and all the top drivers will be there.”

Alford will be back at Avalon Raceway on December 9 in preparation for the January 7 state championships, which will be held in Warrnambool.

But tonight’s action has his focus, with hopes of a large turnout.

“Avalon usually pulls a good crowd, usually for the sprintcars, but the speedcars are starting to pull a big crowd so hopefully the weather stays good, the sun is shining and everyone comes out for a look,” he said.

Also on the Retro Round schedule are sprintcar/super modifieds, stock rods/saloons and the Hell Raisers from the Ace Of Spades crew.

Action starts at 5pm, adults $25, aged and disability concession $20, children 12-16 $10 and children under 12 are free.
