NOW IT’S TIME TO GET SERIOUS, SAYS MADI

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE SUPER NETBALL

COLLINGWOOD netball captain Madi Robinson says overcoming the pressure of wearing black and white will be key to her side’s improvement next season.

The 29-year-old Geelong export led the Magpies into their inaugural Suncorp Super Netball season, but playing for the biggest sporting club in Australia came with an overwhelming expectation.

On paper, the Magpies had compiled a list of stars who were tipped by many to take out last season’s flag.

But Robinson said that weight of pressure proved too great.

“Like anything, whether it’s a start-up business or a new team, although Collingwood has a lot of history, it’s the first time in netball a team has been wearing the black and white,” Robinson said.

“There was a lot of expectation that came with that. For us, it was about finding our feet ... and how we can add to the Collingwood culture, but also have our uniqueness as well.

“People actually don’t like you when you say you play for Collingwood or support them.

“I think it did play a little bit on us, but I think we’re only better having gone through it.”

Robinson, who visited Leo- pold Primary School on Thursday to drum up membership and support for her club, has enjoyed a healthy break heading into the start of pre-season.

The South Barwon product said improved chemistry should help her side improve on last season’s elimination final exit.

“There’s a bit of fire in the belly but we haven’t really talked about it — 2017 is gone and we’ve learnt a lot, but it’s all about what we can do moving forward,” she said.

“Having that first season under our belt is only beneficial for us moving forward.

“But the fact we made finals, although it was disappointing to go out by one, I think we’re going to be better off for it.

“I’m actually really excited to see what this group can do in 2018.”

Robinson said she was looking forward to playing a key role in that rise.

“I guess I’ve had a little bit more of an extended break from netball and when you’re fast approaching 30, that can only be good for the body, I think,” she said.

“Just being back at training is awesome. I feel fresh and revived but also ready to get straight back into it.”
