Agent in swoop on top street

- PETER FARAGO

A NEWTOWN real estate agent turned buyer on Saturday, purchasing an entry-level Geelong West house in what’s fast becoming a million dollar street.

Matt Plunkett entered the bidding at the auction for 21 Coquette St, Geelong West, late, after two other buyers had taken the price from $520,000 to $585,000.

Hodges, Geelong West auctioneer Sean O’Brien opened with a $500,000 vendor bid.

Mr Plunkett and one of the initial bidders continued to duke it out, taking the price over the $600,000 mark before it was knocked down for $605,000.

The underbidders told the Geelong Advertiser they were interesting in buying the property as owner occupiers.

It’s location is ideal, with a short walk to Pakington St or Aberdeen St, and the Geelong West Community around the corner.

The two-bedroom brick veneer house had undergone some renovation, creating an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area with french doors connecting to an elevated deck in the backyard.

The house also has a study, a glossy bathroom and prized off-street parking, including a single garage.

Hodges, Geelong West agent Jeff Begg said the property attracted strong interest because it was entry level to Coquette St.

“You’d prefer this one as entry level, because you’re in millionaire’s row here,” Mr Begg said.

“Across the road is worth $1.2 million.

“And we sold number 4 for $1.12 million.”

Mr Plunkett said the ultimate plan for the property would be to knock it down and build a family house on the 339sq m block. Garden

“It was the first one I’ve bid at,” Mr Plunkett said.

“I’m pretty lucky. I understand, being an agent, that people have been looking for a long time.”

It was the first of two properties auctioned in Coquette St, with a renovated Ed- wardian house at number 17 selling for $750,000.

The charming weatherboard house was on the market for $700,000.

The median house price in Geelong West has climbed 17 per cent this year to $618,000, according to CoreLogic data.
