DJ brings classic sounds

- JEMMA RYAN

MORE than one million CDs with a mix by DJ John Course have been sold in Australia. Now the renowned house DJ is bringing his old-school show to Geelong.

Coursey’s Classics will feature music from his Ministry of Sound, OneLove and Novanation years and take revellers back through two decades of club music in a three-hour set.

He will be joined by local DJs Leigh Clifford and Herbee, who are coming out of semi-retirement for the gig at Home House on Friday.

“The vibe is, rather than bring DJs from Melbourne or DJs that weren’t part of the scene, to get some of the local guys who played it first time round to relive what they were doing 10, 12, 15 years ago. It feels like a good fit,” Course said.

Part of the house music revolution in Australia, Course has mixed more than 17 compilations, including multiple Vicious Cuts, Ministry of Sound Sessions 1,2 3 and 4, OneLove, the 10-year Annual plus six renditions of Ministry’s Annual.

It’s a highly anticipated return to Geelong for Course, who has played at Home House before, but will be most familiar to those who frequented Club 4play, which hosted many of the OneLove and Ministry of Sound parties.

Today, Course is resident at Melbourne’s The Emerson on a Saturday night and plays regularly at clubs across Australia.

He is a founder of Vicious Recordings, the label collective that unearthed Dirty South, Avicii, Peking Duk, Madison Avenue, Sgt Slick, The Potbelleez and Vandalism, and is co-owner of Revered MGMT, which specialises in identifying and nurturing new talent.

Course said he had observed a “full circle” trend in the industry, where old school hits were finding new life with the next generation of DJs and club-goers.

“The new crew do seem to love older music and it’s weird how even the cutting edge DJs are putting in records from 25 years ago,” he said.

Course said Silence by Delerium, Put Your Hands Up For Detroit by Fedde Le Grand, Baby by Pnau and some of The Presets and Sneaky Sound System’s earlier tunes were experiencing a resurgence and would be enjoyed by patrons at the Home House event.
