IT’S WAIT AND SEE UNDER RAIN CLOUDS

- NICK WADE

LOCAL cricket has not been called off today. Yet.

The Geelong Cricket Association will make a call on play at 9am today following an early-morning inspection of grounds.

And the fate of Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association matches will rest in the hands of the club captains and umpires.

The majority of GCA turf grounds were unscathed late yesterday after predicted torrential rain failed to arrive.

Heavy rain was again forecast overnight and into the morning, but the GCA will be guided by the weather and feedback from clubs about the state of their grounds before making a decision.

A majority of grounds would need to be unplayable for the league to consider cancelling matches at 9am.

But as the first week of a new round, the GCA may still err towards a blanket abandonment in favour of a round of one-day matches next weekend if several grounds are hit.

“Rain forecasted earlier today has missed Geelong so far this afternoon,” Geelong Cricket Association secretary Garry Goodman said in an email to clubs late yesterday.

“The grounds committee is going to wait in making a call at 9am (today).

“All clubs, both synthetic and turf, need to go to their grounds and inspect tonight (last night), especially the turf grounds, and report back to me so that the grounds committee can make a judgment.”

The situation is slightly different in the hard-wicket BPCA. As today represents the second of two-day matches in A, B and C Grade, captains and umpires at each venue will decide if a game continues today. There will be no blanket call in those grades.
